Teal Construction – First Quarter Statistics for 2016. We have added seven new employees to our team bringing a multitude of project and industry experience. This month we announced that we will be opening a new office in San Antonio and gained our first project in the region, Carvana San Antonio. The new office will open in May 2016 and will boost our portfolio in Central Texas. We are all excited about our new team members and the opening of our new office continuing Teal’s future.

Our Estimating and Project Management Team have been on a roll bringing in new projects and getting projects that are in preconstruction ready to build. We are continuing to meet our sales goals that we have set for 2016 to surpass the amazing year that we had in 2015. First quarter we are almost split between private and public work, with 54% private and 46% public respectively. This work is 79% new construction and 21% renovation and/or addition. Our leading markets this quarter is Auto Dealerships (43%) and K-12 Education (27%). Teal is continuing to build new relationships for clients and designers while cultivating the partners we have had for years. Check out the link below to get the full April Newsletter and First Quarter Report.

The start of 2016 is an exciting year with a record breaking 2015. Teal is a year away from celebrating it’s 70th anniversary and with that we have set new goals to keep our company growing. We are fortunate to have an amazing team and with the growth we had in 2015 are ready to start new projects and successfully complete ones that are being carried over. Our cover this month shows many of the projects that we completed in 2015.

In 2015 Teal started a new tradition honoring one superintendent and one employee from each office as the Best of the Best. The votes were compiled from their peers and had a management stamp of approval. We have so many talented employees which made it hard to narrow it down to two per office, but with the feedback each nominee received, it brought encouragement and enthusiasm to the process. We are excited to announce the Best of the Best 2015 below

Mike Pettus came to Teal four years ago as a Superintendent. He has worked on both public and private, ground up and renovation. Mike is currently working on the Houston Community College Acres Homes Academic Center. Mike is a proactive Superintendent that sees the big picture which allows him to point out obstacles before they occur to keep projects on track.

“Mike Pettus’ preconstruction review of every project I’ve been on with him has been second to none. His attention to detail and constructability reviews not only help the design team but also assure the project won’t be held up by unforeseen issues in the plans and specifications.”

Gary Ferri has been with the company for 4 years and is currently completing Sinton Middle School for Sinton ISD. He has overcome many obstacles with this project mainly weather delays due to the heavy rains last fall.

In 2009, Teal Construction was lucky enough to score Morelva Gonzalez as a new employee in our Corpus Christi office. Morelva’s job title is Project Coordinator, but really she is running an office and keeping everyone in Corpus on their toes. Morelva goes above and beyond to help all of her employees to get the job done. She is always willing to lend a helping hand no matter what office needs it.

Morelva coordinates all of the projects in Corpus Christi which involves a lot of organization with her project management team. She has an amazing rapport with the subcontractors which in turn builds Teal’s relationship with them. She also plans meetings for the team, events for the subcontractors, and makes sure that anyone that comes into the office feels welcome.

Her management team says that nothing would be done without Morelva’s support and diligence to overcome and successfully complete any challenge. She is an over-achiever and exactly what we need at Teal Construction!

Teal Construction teamed up with Dawson Van Orden Engineering to compete in the CANstruction Houston 2015 competition. We spent many weeks designing and preparing for the event. Our structure was built on Sunday, November 1st at the Houston Food Bank which is one week early from the main competition at City Centre. Throughout the last few weeks we performed test builds of the structure to ensure the stability and work out any kinks before the build day. Though a rainy and weather weekend, our team was able to get all 9,000+ cans to the food bank and unload without too much rain issues. We started our build at around 10am and were completed by 5pm. The structure will be up for the next two weeks, go check it out and bring a CAN for support!

We have been working in the preconstruction phase of both projects for the last year.

Teal is very excited for the Associated Builders & Contractors Excellence in Construction Awards ceremony on October 1st highlighting our Cotton Gin Renovation project. We are a finalist in the Historical Division and look forward to celebrating all of the winners with our peers. The Cotton Gin is an extensive renovation of an eighty year old historical landmark to provide new offices, gathering spaces, and a banquet hall. The project included remediation, installation of new concrete foundation, upgrading the existing structure, interior finished, exterior façade, and the dismantle and reconfigure of the original 1936 cotton gin. The original building had selective demolition and pieces were salvaged to be reused. A new garage was built on the back of the property as well. Forty-Two percent of the project was self-perform work which was done by our Superintendent, Benny Hopper and our quality subcontractor, DND Construction Services.

Throughout a project’s duration, our number one priority is to have all members of our team, partners of Teal, patrons, and the surrounding community to go home each day. We work with our project team and subcontractors to institute strong safety measures to make sure this happens. Through continuing education and training, we keep our team aware on all new and recurring safety regulations that are in our industry. Teal is proud to be part of the ABC OSHA State Cooperative Program and work with our construction colleagues to exceed industry standards.

On Wednesday, July 15th, Teal Construction and PBI Supply hosted a barbeque with clients, architects, engineers, and designers. PBI cooked an amazing barbeque lunch for us all at the Teal Houston Office. Over 60 attendees raved over the delicious barbeque. In the last year, we have renovated our office as our company expands. New office features include a state-of-the-art training room, offices, and upgrading finishes throughout. Teal raffled off wines and the winners were Heather Latch, Dawson Van Orden, Dave Roberts, PDG Architects, JJ Minahan, Thor Equities, and Cliff Nguyen, SI Group. For those that couldn’t make the event, feel free to come by and see the office improvements! A special thanks goes to all of the Teal Employees that helped make this event happen!

Tuesday, PBI drove down and set up shop at Teal to cook our employees dinner. At our monthly meeting PBI spoke about innovations in metal building insulation with energy efficiency and product costs. Our team discussed project progress, jobsite highlights, obstacles, and how these can be resolved. We find the meetings beneficial in learning different ways to manage projects while keeping the consistent Teal mission. The bouncing of ideas help each of our team members to evolve. Thank you PBI for educating our group!

PBI Supply is one of Teal’s metal building insulation suppliers. PBI is a custom fabricator of PEMB insulation and a distributor of other products and insulation systems related to the metal building industry. They have fabrication and warehouse facilities located in Dallas and Houston, which have been around since 1992. PBI Supply and its sister company, Selle Supply, comprise the largest regional metal building insulation laminator in the country. The companies distribute materials in a seven-state area in the Southwestern United States as well as in Mexico and other export countries. We are proud to be partners with PBI and look forward to continuing our relationship. Check out PBI Supply at

On June 5th, BARC Adoption Center had one of many grand opening ceremonies. The morning ceremony was held with a ribbon cutting and Mayor Annise Parker holding a press conference for the opening. There were many visitors at the ceremony including some of the four legged friends that will soon be up for adoption at BARC. Even with all of the rain Houston has experienced in the last couple of months, and throughout the timeline of this project, Mayor Parker said “The show must go on! We were close enough to completion and we really wanted people to see it, because if you just walk through you can get excited about the possibilities here.” The new facility will set the standards for the surrounding city shelters and state. “It is not only a very functional adoption center with state-of-the-art kennels, it’s a beautiful space.” The completion of this facility will be the first of four phases for BARC. The other phases will provide an additional 130 adult dog spaces, a cattery, meeting and education building, and a spay/neuter clinic. The new campus incorporates American Kennel Club standards including ample amounts of natural light. The night event included live music, food and St. Arnold’s Brewing Company.

This is our fourth CM at Risk project completed with the City of Houston. The 15,000 SF building houses indoor and outdoor dog runs, dog adoption kennels (20 adult dogs and 50-60 puppies), courtyard, shell of the cat adoption space, and administrative offices. We are excited to continue our partnership with the City of Houston and to be a part of such a monumental project. The Teal project team included Mike Tancill, Project Manager, Mike Pettus, Superintendent, and Debbie Freeman, Project Coordinator.

All Spring we have been preparing and organizing for the AIA Sandcastle with H4 Architects. We were very excited to see our design, hard work, and team come together on May 30th. The True Avengers Age of Construction were out in full force with Teal Employees, family & friends, and the team at H4 Architects & Engineers. This was an amazing experience for all.

Michael Losoya, our Director of Special Projects, graduated from the ABC Leadership Forum which was a five month program that teaches participants how to succeed as a future manager, CEO, or business leader. The program puts all members together, which facilitates conversation between industries, trades, and a variety of employment positions. Michael says, “One of the best things that I learned, was understanding different co-workers personalities and being able to work successfully with them. To stop learning is to stop growing.” We congratulate Michael on this accomplishment.

, Glenn Jarrett, Project Director for Teal Construction, was the remarkable chef that cooked pulled pork, brisket, sausage, as well as threw together coleslaw and potato salad. We had a large turnout, the SI Group, with the building being erected on the current industrial site in Freeport, we encouraged all of their employees to join us, our architect, iAD and team, and many vendors, subcontractors, and suppliers. After lunch our superintendent, DeWayne Bonin took guests on a tour to view the construction progress. All were very excited to see the layout of the interior as the metal studs have been installed showing a glimpse of the floor plan on both floors.

Our subcontractors have done a superb job overcoming weather obstacles to keep this project moving. We know as a general contractor that the overall outcome of any project will be determined by the subcontractors that we choose and we are very lucky to have high-quality subcontractors on this project. The entire team thanks them for the hard work that they have done and look forward to the ribbon-cutting!

A special thanks to Les Chipman, Vice President and Project Manager for the SI Group project, Chantela Rowland, Project Coordinator, Kelly Richardson, Estimating Coordinator, and Jennifer King, Marking Director for helping make this event a success!

This CM at Risk project is a new 10,000 SF, two story tilt-wall building that houses administrative offices, conference rooms, research library and auxiliary spaces. Final Completion date is set for the end of the year.

In the last month, Teal has been busy starting new projects, community events, quarterly training sessions, safety seminars, and celebrating our Tealians new and old. Mike McGlynn, Superintendent, celebrated his 20 year anniversary this month. He is a super star superintendent that has worked on both private and public projects throughout his time with Teal. One of his favorite projects was building the French Ellison Trucking Center in Converse, Texas. This included a new 38,000 SF, 2-story office building, 6 bay eighteen-wheeler service center, improving the site, and renovations of existing buildings. The project lasted approximately 3 years with preconstruction and construction. We are very lucky to have Mike on our team and hope that he will stay for another 20 years!
