GRAND OPENING
HOUSTON, TEXAS - Located south of the Texas Medical Center near the intersection of Fannin Street and Holmes Road, the new 85,000-square-foot facility for Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center was introduced to the public with a grand opening on May 20.
About 250 of the blood center’s 700 employees work in the new building which houses the central supply, donor collections and vehicle maintenance departments.
Construction consists of a tilt-wall, metal building structure and is to be LEED Certified. Among the facility’s eco-friendly features are solar skylights that provide natural lighting, a white reflective roof that helps with the heat, and an on-site retention pond that helps water the landscape. Every office has a recycling bin, and paint and carpeting are made with eco-friendly materials. Bike racks have been added so employees can bike to work, and hybrid cars are given premium parking spaces. Dual-flush toilets save water – pull the handle up for less water or push down for a stronger flush. Rain tanks under the parking lot collect rainwater for re-use, and trees in the way of construction were not cut down, but instead were replanted elsewhere.
